The project brief sought to reinstate the Valletta market as a public, gastronomic hub in the heart of the city. This initiative challenged current perceptions of the building and provided the public with an opportunity to rediscover and experience the identity within a renewed context. Whether shopping for daily supplies, taking a coffee break, dining, attending a cultural event or even spending the night, the food theme is unmistakably the magnet.
The design methodology employed was to expose and elevate the sense of openness and intricate detail of this architectural landmark, rather than compete with it.
To further populate the building, the four facades were opened up, creating permeability and interaction with all surrounding streets.
The result was a trigger for further regeneration initiatives in the vicinity, a building with a soul and a heart that beats around the clock.
